What are HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology?
|
|
HUGS (Harness Ultra-Guard System) Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology are affixed to the car seat shell to ensure proper positioning. The chest pads contain SafeCells, which are engineered structures that are designed to compress in a crash and manage energy to reduce the amount of impact forces experienced by your child.

Where are HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology located on the car seat?
HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology are affixed to the back of the car seat by a strap that runs along the back of the harness straps, through the harness slots to the back of the shell.
How does my child benefit from a seat that features HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology?
The job of a car seat is to minimize injury during a crash, and one way that a car seat accomplishes that is by minimizing forward movement of your child during a crash. HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology 1.) ensure proper positioning, 2.) help manage energy, and 3.) provide resistance to the forward movement of your child during a crash, reducing the risk of head injury.
How do HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology work?
HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology provide protection for your child in two ways:
- The HUGS Chest Pads are affixed to the seat shell, which ensures that the harness is properly positioned on your child.
- During a crash, the SafeCells on the back side of the HUGS Chest pads assist in reducing forward movement of your child by adding friction to the harness against your child’s chest as they move forward. Additionally, the SafeCells compress to further manage energy, reducing the risk of head injury.
HUGS can be found on seats that accommodate larger children because a heavier child’s weight will interact differently with the seat than a lighter child. A smaller or lighter child has a lower center of gravity and is closer to the anchorage points of the child seat; they do not require the extra assistance to keep them from moving forward as with a larger/taller child. As your child grows their center of gravity changes and moves further away from the anchorage points of the seat and therefore requires more assistance in reducing movement during a crash.
Although the HUGS chest pads are required for all size children in the forward-facing installation mode for seats that come equipped with them, they are optional in the rear-facing installation mode where your child is instead cradled by the child seat back in a frontal impact.
Loosening the Harness on seats featuring HUGS with SafeCell Technology
Please note that because the HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology are affixed to the seat shell, the process of loosening the harness on a seat that includes this features is different from a seat with a traditional harness. To loosen the harness straps, follow these simple steps:
 |
- Lift the harness adjuster lever located under the cover flap
- Grasp the chest clip
- Pull the chest clip outward

This video explaining how to secure your child in the seat also demonstrates how to loosen the harness:
